“I am convinced that it is still possible to make art that matters by traditional means. To work with paint on paper or canvas, to play with shape and colour, to create an image, gives me a lot of satisfaction. The abstract values such as shape, colour, rhythm and character of the skin of the painting are leading. The content of an artwork does not interest me all that much; it is all about the effect, the shape.

Since my childhood, I have had a passion for art and art history. My work is rooted in the tradition and I am inspired by the work of the great masters. Especially the 20th-century art, such as Expressionism, Surrealism and Abstract expressionism has influenced my work.

Inspite of the examples of many great predecessors, I think I have come to a personal visual language of my own. I do not mean style here, a style is too rigid. I try to hold on to freedom, to see each new painting as an adventure, where the outcome is never fixed beforenhand. Each painting is an experiment and has its own rules. A painting is successful for me when it creates a world of its own, parallel to reality. There must be a poetic relationship with reality.”
